A mind free of connections makes for an effective public servant

There are many people in the world who dedicate themselves to public service, but even the most dedicated of these individuals may unwittingly be taking an incomplete approach to their work. In order to get the best results out of service, one must completely divest themselves of Earthly connections and desires.
This may seem like an odd approach, but the Korean phrase Gong-Shim, which means "empty mind" and is used to refer to a mind for the public good, suggests that eliminating attachments frees a person from personal desires that may interfere with true selfless service.
When a person has their own desires or interpersonal relationships, these things can color the types of causes they choose to become involved in or the lengths they are willing to go to help someone. However, when these factors are eliminated from a person's life, the individual is free to put all their energy behind the most worthy causes.
This is not to say that family and friendship do not have their place in society. These things are what make life worth living for the majority of people. However, for those who have decided to devote their life to charity and peace on Earth, these types of attachments may only be a hindrance.
