Finding one’s Tao is critical to spiritual growth

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

There is only one path that a person can follow. While life may seem like an endless web of interconnected highways and byways, there is only one direction in which a person can go in their life. Accepting this truth may be the foundation of a search for spiritual growth and is the underpinning of the Korean term Tao.

Translated, Tao means "the way." It refers to the direction a person must take their life in order to attain enlightenment and growth. This path may not necessarily be the same for every person but there is only one direction that an individual may choose.

This is often a difficult concept for people to grasp. They look at the world around them and think that they could do just about whatever they want. However, each person was put on this Earth do one special thing. While it may take some searching, this purpose inevitably becomes clear. Fulfilling this role in the world is the key to a person's spiritual growth.

Therefore, a person should think of their Tao as a lightly trodden trail through the woods rather than a concrete highway. The highway is directionless and can go just about anywhere, but the trail has only one destination.

Clearing the mind is important for public service

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Without meaning to, individuals often find ways to stand in their own way. They think they need to fill their lives up with all kinds of activities and pursuits. However, the Korean saying Mu-Shim suggests that this is the wrong approach to take when pursuing spiritual growth.

The phrase translates to "mind for the public good," and is used to describe an individual with a clear consciousness who is able to put their thoughts toward creation and productivity.

The part about having a clear mind is the most important. Too often, individuals think that knowledge and wisdom comes from filling their minds up with new facts and information. However, creativity is more likely to spring from an uncluttered brain.

When creativity becomes a major part of an individual's life, they are more capable of getting in touch with their true self. Through the expression of this self, a person is often able to work for the public good.

Therefore, the process of clearing the mind lays at the intersection of public service, creativity and spiritual growth.

Ki energy is central to life

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Ki energy plays a central role in the teachings of Ilchi Lee and it is also a key part of every person’s life. No matter what an individual is doing or how they are feeling, they are being directly influenced by Ki energy.

It is not something that can be seen or felt directly. Instead, Ki energy must be sensed through the observation of secondary phenomena. Throughout the course of an average day, a person will witness many signs of Ki energy, but the majority of individuals are just not aware of these things.

For this reason, opening one’s mind up to the world around them and seeking to understand nature in its full potential are important elements of living a fulfilling life and leaving open the possibility of spiritual growth.

While Ki energy surrounds all things at all times, it can be difficult to come to terms with the influence it has over everyone’s lives. Therefore, it is important for individuals to practice mental training exercises, such as meditation, in order to prepare their brain for accepting the truth about Ki energy, as well as their own role in the universe.

Humanity must celebrate the duality of its nature

Monday, June 20th, 2011

As humans we are constantly reminded of the duality of our nature. The spiritual and the Earthly intermingle in the human race like no other species that has ever walked the face of the Earth. For those who understand the importance of spiritual growth, the reminders of this connection are all around them.

There is a saying in Korean, In-Jung-Chun-Ji-Il. Translated, it means “humans bear heaven and Earth, and the three make one.” It describes the central role that both the spiritual and the animal play in the lives of all humans.

Sometimes there is a tendency for individuals to get lost in their own thoughts, forgetting the importance of their physical self. Conversely, it is common for people to focus solely on physical pursuits. However, this denies the person half of their true nature.

The only way for a person to fully experience their full self is to embrace both aspects of their nature. This includes the physical and the spiritual. A greater acceptance of this fact may help individuals in their pursuit of spiritual growth and fulfillment in their life.

Ilchi points to the truth

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

In Korean, the term Ilchi has a complex set of connotations and meanings, and understanding their precise usage may help individuals understand the ways in which certain types of teachings can direct their search for fulfillment in life and spiritual growth.

The first part of the term, Il, means “the one,” “the truth” or “the way.” The second part, Chi, means “to point.” Therefore, the world literally means “one who points to the way or truth.” This phrase has a powerful meaning when it comes to certain teachings.

Ilchi Lee adopted it as his first name to tell people that he does not believe he is privy to any secret knowledge. He is not delivering divine revelation. Instead, he is simply here to remind individuals of things that they are likely already well aware of.

His teachings are generally not very complicated. But they involved a focus on life principles that many people forget about during the course of their everyday existence. Things like charity, peace, mental clarity and elimination of stress form the corner stones of Lee’s advice.

It is nothing new for someone to point out the importance of these things. However, people often need reminders.

Yoga could bring spiritual growth while giving birth

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

Women have been trying to ease the pain of giving birth for centuries and while there are now medications available, some prefer to go the natural route.

Actress Jessica Alba is pregnant with her second child and this time she plans to try a different approach to the birthing process. According to OK Magazine, Alba was recently on the Ellen Show to talk about her plans for HypnoBirthing.

While Ellen DeGeneres grilled Alba about the birthing process, asking if it was a form of hypnotism, Alba was quick to shoot it down saying that it's a form of meditation that her husband helps her with.

"He just sort of does a guided meditation," she explained, according to the source. "I'm just concentrating on breathing and staying relaxed because it's when you get tense that makes the whole labor worse and more painful."

Alba is not alone, other women practice meditation during childbirth as a way to calm their anxiety, which is often the root of a lot of pain, according to Parents Connect. Women who are planning to give birth in the near future may want to read Ilchi Lee's meditation books in order to learn the proper technique.

Cosmic energy surrounds everything

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Most people tend to feel that the human race is rather isolated here on planet Earth. However, everything in creation shares a deep connection to the heavens and all of their celestial bodies. Understanding this connection, as described by the Korean phrase Chun-ji-ki-un, may play an important role in an individual's pursuit of spiritual growth.

Chun-ji-ki-un refers to the cosmic energy that flows through everything. It pervades everything on Earth's surface down to its very core, but it also extends further. This is the energy that helps form our atmosphere and originates from well beyond.

It is from this energy that the people and the animals of the Earth take their sustenance. Without it we would be lost.

While the cosmic energy may be universal, that does not necessarily mean that everyone knows how to tap into it or make the most of it. In order to accomplish this, individuals may need to engage in practices such as meditation or yoga to bring their mind to a place where it is capable of comprehending the intense influence cosmic energy has.

Once a person is ready to realize the pull of Chun-ji-ki-un, they may be more prepared to pursue spiritual growth in a number of ways.

Humans have intimate connection to the Earth and Heaven

Friday, May 20th, 2011

In Korean Chun-Ji-In means "Heaven, Earth, human." When they are combined into a single phrase they are used to remind individuals of their intimate connection to the ground they walk on and the air they breathe. Embracing this connection can result in a strong foundation for quests of spiritual growth.

Heaven, or the sky, is boundless and encompasses all things. It does not discriminate or force anything from its embrace. Instead, it is inclusive and welcoming and holds everything within its grasp.

The Earth provides all things with a solid footing, allowing them to pursue their lives with surety and a strong foundation.

The reference to human serves to remind everyone that they are still spiritual creatures that share an intimate connection to Heaven and the Earth.

When a person comes to appreciate this relationship, they develop a whole new understanding of their role in the Universe. They may see that they are actually a part of an endless chain that connects everything in existence.

This can be a powerful realization that stimulates searches for spiritual growth.

Knowing one’s source may be key for spiritual growth

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

The Korean term Bohn talks about the importance of knowing one's roots. However, this has less to do with cultural or religious heritage than the innate spiritual link that everyone has to the cosmic source.

Bohn means "origin" or "essence". It talks about the fundamentals that underlie something. When it comes to a person, there is a deep spiritual link that connects a person to everything around them.

This source also burns like a flame within every individual and is the spark that most people refer to as consciousness. This is a person's true nature and informs everything that they think about and do in the course of their days.

Bohn is inescapable. It is always with a person, even when they are not aware of it. Therefore, embracing this source and striving to understand it may play an important role in any quest for spiritual growth.

A person may be able to get in touch with their true inner self through mind-body techniques such as meditation, yoga or t'ai chi. These methods may help bring them closer to a deep understanding of their connection to the world around them.

Tao may hold the secrets to fulfillment

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

There may be many paths that a person can take in their life. The world lays before everyone nearly limitless possibilities. However, there are few that actually lead to spiritual growth and fulfillment and discovering this Tao can have a major impact on an individual's life.

Tao is a concept in Korean culture that refers to "the way." It talks about the path that every person must follow to reach their optimal spiritual growth. While most people may think they know what they want out of life, and therefore assume finding their Tao to be an easy process, it can actually much more challenging than that.

Upon closer examination, it may become clear to a person that they are actually unsure what they are doing with their life. Perhaps they feel happy, but they may not be using their unique skills and opportunities to help advance humanity. This may leave any life feeling empty and hollow.

This is why searching for one's true Tao can be an important process. It can bring greater fulfillment and satisfaction while also benefiting the broader community.
